Top Libyan Energy Officials to Chart Renewable Energy Path at LEES 2025
The Renewable Energy Authority of Libya, Renewable Energy Holding Company, and the Advisor to the Prime Minister for Electricity and Renewable Energy Affairs will outline strategies to advance Libya’s energy transition and diversify its power mix.
Libya’s renewable energy ambitions will take center stage at the Libya Energy & Economic Summit (LEES) 2025, scheduled for January 18-19 in Tripoli. The summit will highlight the country’s transition toward sustainable energy, with a focus on renewable energy development, investment opportunities and partnerships. LEES 2025 is honored to host key figures leading Libya’s renewable energy transformation, including:
- Dr. Abdulsalam Elansari, Chairman, Renewable Energy Authority of Libya
- Asiel Younis Mohammed Artaima, Chairman, Renewable Energy Holding Company
- Osama El Durrat, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Electricity and Renewable Energy Affairs
Libya has made significant strides in diversifying its energy mix through renewable energy initiatives. Recent collaborations include a 1,500 MW solar project developed by PowerChina and EDF in Eastern Libya, a 500 MW solar plant in Al-Sadada by TotalEnergies (expected to commence operations in 2026), and a 200 MW solar plant in Ghadames in partnership with AG Energy. Additionally, UAE’s Alpha Dhabi Holding is driving efforts to expand solar capacity by 2 GW. The Renewable Energy Authority of Libya has set a clear target to achieve 10% renewable energy in the nation’s power mix by 2025, supported by strategic partnerships with countries such as Italy and Qatar.
With 88% of its terrain consisting of desert, Libya’s solar and wind energy potential is immense. The country benefits from an average of 3,200 sunshine hours annually and solar irradiation levels of 6 kWh per m² per day. Wind energy resources are equally promising, with average speeds ranging from 6 to 7.7 meters per second at 40 meters above ground level. These conditions position Libya as a potential renewable energy powerhouse, capable of meeting domestic needs and contributing to regional energy security.
The Libya Energy & Economic Summit is set to take place in Tripoli on January 18-19, 2025. The event will bring together industry leaders, investors and policymakers, aiming to foster dialogue, secure investments and support the growth of Libya’s energy and infrastructure sectors.
