LEES: Eni to Spud Area C Ultra-Deep Exploration Well in H2, 2025
)
Global energy major Eni is employing a two-fold approach to boost production in Libya. The company aims to maximize output at producing assets while undertaking a strong exploration drive across the country’s on- and offshore basins. The first well of this exploration campaign will be spud in H2, 2025, targeting play-opening discoveries in the ultra-deepwaters of Area C.
Speaking to Energy Capital & Power at the Libya Energy & Economic Summit 2025, Eni’s Upstream Director Luca Vignati said that the company is in the process of drilling onshore, targeting near-term production, and plans to drill another exploration well in the Bahr Essalam area in 2025.
Eni believes that there is still a lot to be discovered in Libya’s on- and offshore acreage. Vignati said: “We have an ambitious exploration program that is targeting two different areas offshore and one area onshore. Some of the wells are frontier and deepwater wells that have not been tapped, so we can expect some positive surprises.”
In addition to exploration efforts, Eni is deploying technology to maximize output from its producing fields while spearheading several major infrastructure developments. The company currently produces upwards of 8 billion cubic meters of gas in Libya, 80% of which is utilized in the domestic market and 20% exported to Europe. Upcoming projects seek to boost production while increasing exports.
“The first is the A&E Structures project; the second is Bouri Gas Utilization, which will reduce gas flaring and transform the value of gas; and the third is the Sabratha Compression unit that will maximize the recovery from the asset. These projects will provide a further 8 bcm to the country,” Vignati explained.
