How Digital Innovation is Transforming Libya’s Oilfields

How Digital Innovation is Transforming Libya’s Oilfields

Libya’s oil sector is entering a new era of modernization, driven by strategic international partnerships and cutting-edge digital technologies. The National Oil Corporation (NOC) has recently signed MoUs with major global players, including ExxonMobil, bp and Shell, to conduct geological and geophysical studies across the Sirte Basin and key oilfields such as Sarir, Messla, and al-Atshan. These agreements not only signal growing foreign investment but also reinforce Libya’s commitment to modernizing its upstream operations.

At the same time, Libya’s oilfields are embracing a digital transformation. Technologies such as AI and advanced data analytics are being integrated into core workflows to improve efficiency, safety and environmental management. Together, these international collaborations and technological innovations are reshaping how Libya explores, produces and manages its oil resources, laying the groundwork for a smarter, more sustainable oil industry.

AI-Driven Exploration and Smart Oilfields

Data-driven smart oilfield initiatives are at the forefront of Libya’s digital transformation. Global technology company SLB has deployed AI-powered video analytics alongside electric submersible pump performance tools, reducing well-site visits by over 90% and enhancing production monitoring. Meanwhile, the NOC is exploring AI-driven seismic processing in partnership with the Arabian Gulf Oil Company, aiming for faster timelines, improved resource discovery and cost reductions.

Smart Oil Cities Initiative

The NOC is exploring “Smart Oil Cities” in partnership with telecom providers Al-Madar, Libyana and Hatif Libya, through an MOU signed in September 2024. The initiative seeks to modernize digital infrastructure in oil hubs, integrating advanced telecommunications and IT systems to improve operational efficiency and sustainability. While in early stages, these efforts could enable real-time data analysis, smarter resource management, and reduced operating costs – marking a strategic step toward digital transformation in Libya’s oil sector.

Data-Driven Environmental and Operational Management

Libya’s oil sector is increasingly turning to real-time data analytics to optimize production and minimize environmental impact. Companies like AOSCO Oilfield Services and Sirte Oil Company are deploying digital gas lift monitoring systems to track pressure, flow rates and production. Coupled with satellite telemetry from partners such as Rawafed Libya and Inmarsat, this approach enables proactive decision-making, reduces downtime, enhances safety and lays the foundation for sustainable oilfield management.

The growing adoption of digital innovations in Libya’s oil sector will be a key focus at the Libya Energy & Economic Summit (LEES) 2026. The event will highlight AI, satellite monitoring, smart infrastructure and other technologies, showcasing real-world applications, fostering collaboration with technology providers, and offering insights from leaders driving Libya’s upstream digital transformation.
