bp Eyes Expansion in Libya Amid Multi-Well Drilling Program

Energy major bp is driving a multi-well drilling campaign in Libya following the resumption of activities in the country in 2024. Targeting multiple oil and gas formations, the company seeks to bring new wells online, supporting national goals of increasing production to two million barrels per day.

Speaking in an interview with Energy Capital & Power at the Libya Energy & Economic Summit (LEES) 2025, Ariel Flores, Senior Vice President: Subsurface, bp, explained that the company is focused on leveraging existing seismic data and the upcoming licensing round – launching in early 2025 – to drive exploration.

He said: “We have got a multi-well program [underway], and with success, it should lead to more wells. We are hopeful that the 3D seismic that we acquired in the past alongside our latest technology will help us with imaging, which will help us place wells properly and lead to a successful development in the future.”

In addition to the licensing round, bp is prioritizing brownfield developments. Flores explained that “existing assets will underpin our partnership, as we are also experts around giant field redevelopments and brownfields. We have got an excellent skillset and track record in the greater MENA area, which we would love to do in Libya…”

Through conferences such as LEES 2025, Flores said that companies in Libya can benefit from dialogue and networking. “Our global partnerships are strong and bringing them to Libya will only bring positive results for the country. Hence, these conferences lead to more commitment and real momentum that will unlock new resources in the future,” he added.
